Sainsbury’s has already begun moving away from oil-based plastic and have been trialling a more sustainable plant-based plastic called Polylactic acid (PLA), made from the sugars in cornstarch. PLA teabags are made from renewable plant-based material and are industrially compostable, unlike the current oil-based plastic teabags. Sainsbury’s will move over 859 million individual teabags a year from using oil-based plastic to plant-based plastic. The retailer has found the popularity of tea has been increasing this year with sales of tea rising by 6% year on year.

DANONE YOGURT CONTAINERS & CUPS
Danone has switched to Ingeo - a plastic from plants, not oil - for its Activia yogurt in Germany. The switch to the technologically innovative material will improve the product’s packaging carbon footprint by 25% and use 43% less fossil resources compared to the previous packaging. Danone is the first company to switch to environmentally friendly packaging for a leading yogurt product in Europe.
STONYFIELD FARM YOGURT CUPS
October 2010, global organic yogurt leader Stonyfield Farm, replaced all of its petroleum-based multipack yogurt cups with cups made from plant-based Ingeo. The new cups are a first for the dairy industry and reduce the package’s greenhouse gas emissions by 48 percent. All new Ingeobased multipack cups look and feel exactly like the petroleum-based yogurt cups they replace and now carry a “This Cup is Made From Plants” stamp on the bottom. Current Stonyfield multipack product lines include YoBaby, YoToddler, YoKids, B-Healthy, B-Well, Probiotic and O’Soy.

VEGWARE COLD CUPS
Vegware holds the deepest set of compostability certification in the sector. Their full product range can be commercially composted with food waste where accepted. Independent bodies have certified their products and can break down in under 12 weeks in industrial composting facilities. The most widely used compostability standards are the European EN13432 and the American ASTM D6400. They are largely equivalent, and include the following elements:
Biodegradation – materials turn to soil through microbial action at the same rate as cellulose (paper)
Disintegration – the materials fall into small pieces
Eco-toxicity – seeds can germinate in the resulting compost – i.e. it is useful for plant growth
Heavy metals – the compost is safe to go onto land
